#GoodGreenDeeds Campaign
Communities need access to knowledge to uplift themselves and transform their lives. Jive Media Africa partnered with the Department of Environmental Affairs (now the Department of Environmental Affairs, Forestry and Fisheries) to implement the national #GoodGreenDeeds campaign in South Africa.
The campaign was designed to raise awareness and educate the public about recycling. This is to encourage sustainable lifestyles in light of the ecological impact of climate change on biodiversity and the livelihood of many South Africans.
Sharing scientific information with low-literacy audiences can be challenging. That’s why we used comics as a medium, employing the transformative power of art to convey powerful messages in innovative ways. Art is a universal language and visual imagery transcends barriers to convey complex ideas to wide audiences.
The comics provide fun, interactive opportunities for learning. They also highlight the ways in which the “Four R’s” – Reduce, Recover, Reuse and Recycle – create jobs and opportunities through waste picking and re-purposing waste materials for eco-friendly living. Or how choosing sustainable packaging results in long-term savings and even how to recycle everyday items. The campaign also introduced the public to the more complex ideas of green energy and measuring human impact on the environment.
The project provides the public with the opportunity of becoming agents of change by improving their lives and the lives of others – creating a cleaner, brighter South Africa. Have you done your #GoodGreenDeed for the day?
