Exhibitions

Jive Media Africa have put together a number of exhibitions around subjects such as PalaeoTourism (Client: Dept of Science and Technology), Astronomy (Clients: SKA, IYA), Political Cartooning (Client: EU/ CWCI), Antarctica (Client: Robert Inglis), etc.

Here are some hightlights:

Mobile Exhibition: International Year of Astronomy (IYA) banner – “The Universe – yours to explore”

Making the universe everyone’s to explore.

We’re bringing the universe closer to ordinary South Africans. Jive Media has produced a 10m long banner with the stunning images from deep space that are usually only available to those with internet access.

This banner showcases space to the general public. Large, high resolution images of near and deep space will showcase phenomenon such as nebulae, supernovas, globular clusters and galaxies, in all their brilliance. Images of our sun, earth and moon as many have never seen them before, as well as the planets in our solar system, are also showcased.

SKA Banners

An extract from an email received from Charles Phillips appears below:

Hi Marina –
This is just to say how thrilled we are to receive the fantastic set of six
SKA banners recently, and to confirm that these are now proudly hung near
our Space Zone along with all our space and astronomy displays which include
a large SALT model, Mark Shuttleworth’s space suit and a replica of his
Soyuz capsule, interactive Mars Rover plus some actual space debris that
landed in W/Cape some years ago etc etc!

Cartooning for Democracy: 10 years of political cartooning

We curated a hugely successful exhibition held first at The Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg, and then at Museum Africa, Johannesburg. The Exhibition consisted of 150 cartoons from the last decade, as well as workshops for aspiring cartoonists, and educational materials. This exhibition was funded by the CWCI, EU funding.

Antarctica: Healing in Harsh Places
A Photographic Exhibition by Robert Inglis

This exhibition ran at The Tatham Art Gallery, containing beautiful A2 photographs of Robert Inglis’ overwinter 15 month stay in Antarctica. The exhibition was dedicated to a young man who died of AIDS-related complications, who had one of Robert’s photographs of Antarctica on his wall.

Ntombi’s Song – Comic and Facilitators Guide

Ntombi’s Song – Psychosocial Support Cluster of the Children In Distress Network (CINDI)

A comic booklet and facilitator guide (in English and isiZulu) aimed at encouraging children to disclose sexual abuse. The booklet highlights, through dialogue, activities and pictures, the fears and difficulties of reporting a case of sexual abuse.

CINDI decided to restrict its use to specific facilitators who they felt could handle the level of disclosure.

Journeying for Justice

What moves ordinary people to risk their comfort for the sake of others? What keeps people hopeful in times of despair? Why would people to take great risks to act against their oppression?

Journeying for Justice gives insight into these questions by recounting the real-life experiences of men and women who have felt compelled by faith and circumstance to keep working for a just society.

These are the stories of those who have worked with, and inspired the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness (PACSA). The book tells the story of 30 years of faith-based social justice work in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands of South Africa. These are stories of faith in action.

Laduma! Stick to your TB Gameplan

Our client: US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) and the Eastern Cape Department of Health

Our brief: Communication Strategy and TB Awareness-raising Products

This comic is part of a TB adherence initiative for children. We used activities through the comic to reinforce key messages. The story unfolds with a simple narrative of a child who is helped to recover from TB through the support of friend who has overcome the disease. The communication of the key concepts and messages is strengthened through the use of narrative, activities as well as additional information.

Palaeontology and Archaeology

Jive Media Africa completed a tour around South Africa visiting the prehistory sites that have shaped world knowledge on the evolution of life – and more recently human life – on our planet. These palaeontological and archaeological sites create a wonderful opportunity to share science with the public. They take us back to humankind’s African Origins.

Jive Media Africa produced 3 books about the sites, specifically a learner guide, a tourism guide and portfolio of research activities.
Nonhlanhla Vilakazi, a palaeo-herpitologist (studies fossilized reptiles), came along for the ride and recorded her experiences (in words, images and video clips) on a weblog.
