With rufous wings and a piercing cry, the Jackal Buzzard is a familiar figure in Southern Africa’s skies. But this common, endemic raptor is colliding head-on with South Africa’s green energy ambitions. As wind turbines rise on prime hunting ridges, the species faces a silent, mounting death toll. Ornithologist Merlyn Nkomo is working to change that, arming policymakers and wind farm operators with the science needed to keep the buzzard’s cry alive.
