A better future is a co-created future

In South Africa, the root causes of violence against women and girls in marginalised communities – urban informal settlements and rural communities – are especially pronounced, with informal settlements housing a significant portion of the population. (Photo: Supplied).

Violence under the spotlight: A multifaceted phenomenon

This study used a photovoice discipline where participants took pictures of what was important in their lives and then had focus group discussions, producing rich data about how people understood what was important for a good life. (Photo: Supplied).

Coordinating large-scale international projects can be both complex and rewarding, especially in the field of biomedical research. For Théodora Mayouya, one of GIFT’s project coordinators, her wealth of experience and specialised skills have made her adept at managing these challenges with confidence. (Photo: Supplied).

Navigating complexity: Insights from a GIFT project coordinator

The Siyaphambili Youth project aimed to look at various mental health inventions and in the creation of these inventions they had young people from local communities employed as Youth Peer Research Assistants (YRPAs) to give a different perspective to that of just the researchers. Anda Madikida, a study coordinator at the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation in Cape Town, has been instrumental in the Genital Inflammation Test (GIFT) research project. Recently, in an interview with Jive Media Africa, Anda discussed her responsibilities and provided valuable insights into her role in this project. (Photo: Supplied).

In a recent webinar, “Culturing a Cure”, the third in the Women up to Know Good series, a panel of experts discussed innovative research into how to cultivate ‘healthy’, resilient vaginal microbiomes. This research is particularly significant as the current treatment for bacterial vaginosis, a course of antibiotics, has not changed since the 1980s and is not effective in durably eliminating bacterial vaginosis in the long term. Culturing a cure: new research sparks hope for women’s vaginal health

GIFT repository manager, Jacoeb Ganief, holds a vaginal swab from a study participant collection pack. Over the course of this study, each participant will provide several samples to be stored and catalogued at the GIFT repository. (Photo: Supplied).
