Engaging (with) power at the Popular Education Network (PEN) conference 2018

Inspired… is what you get when you put 80 activists, educators and researchers from 15 countries together on a community-managed olive farm in the Western Cape. Rich stories together with lively (and often challenging) interactions among the diverse participants created space for exploring issues of power at the 8th International Popular Education Network (PEN2018) conference at Goedgedacht in the Western Cape.

Jive Media Africa Directors, Hilary Kromberg and Robert Inglis had the opportunity to share experiences related to the theme of the conference “Engaging (with) Power”. Hilary Kromberg’s exciting research on adolescent health through hip hop music-making demonstrated the immense (and oft-ignored) power of young people to take ownership of their own health and well-being.

Robert Inglis facilitated a workshop on participatory media production as an approach to disrupting power dynamics inherent in many learning and communication contexts. Find out more about the PEN2018 conference here: http://www.populareducation.co.za/pen-2018
